Steven Grames got his start writing songs and poetry at the age of 14. Primarily a singer- songwriter hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Steven has spent the last two decades writing, recording and performing in various capacities and genres. He is also a published author and poet. In 1986, Steven co-founded a Salt Lake City punk band called, 'Chipmunks Go Punk' with bassist/cellist Eric Kartchner. The band lasted seven years and recorded a whopping 23 albums, only one of which, "Listen to us Flip," was ever released publicly (you can listen to it here). While Steven and Eric were ever the constant forces behind the band, various friends and musicians participated throughout those years, providing for an ever-changing and evolving sound; an idea that Steven strives for even today. While still a member of Chipmunks Go Punk, Steven recorded four solo albums (also never released publicly). In 1990, singer/songwriter Laura Larsen joined the group. That same year she became Steven’s wife (sadly, she passed away on December 11, 2003 due to juvenile diabetic complications, a lifelong battle that she fought with optimism and courage to the end. Chipmunks Go Punk recorded their final album in July of 1993 in the absence of Laura who had already quit the band to concentrate on having her first child. The remaining duo played one last live show under the name 'CreatureHouse' that August. Steven and Eric then decided to disband, citing the usual "creative differences". The two had grown up and away from this once fundamental venture, as well as away from each other (go here to listen to a 'greatest hits' compilation of the band). Eric followed his own path down the electronic superhighway, releasing a keyboard-based album called “Spy in the City of Salt” in early 2001. An accomplished cellist, he teaches cello and continues to write and record on his own. He is currently (2009) in the Salt Lake City local band 'Katalyst of Disaster'. As for Steven, he began recording under the name 'LillyWhite' (his great-great grandmother’s maiden name) in 1995, publicly releasing three guitar-based psychedelic/punk albums by the year 2000. Also in 2000, Steven and Laura released a keyboard-based, electronic project together titled, "The Krystle Bleu Dimension". (to hear 2 volumes of Lillywhite's 'greatest hits', as well as the KBD album in its entirety, go here). In 2001, after 8 years of not working together and rarely speaking, Steven and Eric reformed as CreatureHouse, releasing a self-titled album in 2002 of revised Chipmunks Go Punk songs, as well as a few new creations. The project turned out to be a combination of dark electric sounds and alternative acoustic creations. The duo began playing acoustic shows in local coffee houses prior to the album’s release. However, creative differences had moved in once more, resulting in the project’s demise before the album ever saw a release date. To listen to the album in its entirety, go here. As a result of having played the acoustic shows with CreatureHouse, Steven rediscovered not only his early songwriting roots, but a whole new outlook on life altogether. He started writing acoustic songs in 2002 (something virtually unheard of during the LillyWhite years), and shifted his focus to writing poetry and acoustic-based biographical songs. “I still love to make noise," he says. “But I also have a need to express how I feel about things, people, and the world in general . That acoustic kind of music feels like home. When I was a punk kid, I wrote punk songs. But I don’t feel that way anymore. I have to write about what’s happening in my life right now." In the meantime, Steven is always busy writing and recording and recently published his first memoir, "Purple Diamonds Dance," which can be previewed and purchased by going here.
